The initial (first) number 1 on this square carved and lettered sunken panel dated 1631 requires further inspection. The lower right side 'tick', or serif, appears to be a fresh incision compared with the rest of the digit and the complete inscription.

Is it possible that at some point in time, the '1' was manipulated from a 'J' ?

The images shown above were taken in a very dim light and just ten minutes before a service was due to begin hence the poor quality captures. i will, however, endeavor to return to the church to continue the quest.
